Religious freedom for South West Brisbane CLC client

South West Brisbane Community Legal Centre's Outreach Solicitor assisted a woman who had experienced significant domestic violence. She faced a long-winded parenting dispute with her ex-husband who bitterly opposed her religion.

The woman had to represent herself in a two day trial in which her ex-husband was represented by a Barrister and Solicitor.

South West Brisbane Community Legal Centre's Outreach Lawyer supported her to self-represent by drafting her response, affidavit, notice of risk, and an extensive case outline including arguments supported by statute and case law. Despite self-representing, the mother received all of the orders that she sought, including retaining her status as primary caregiver of the child and she was granted sole parental responsibility over all matters concerning religion.
