Lawright funding disappointment

Posted September 14, 2017

The Attorney-General has today advised LawRight of their funding future, and they are immensely disappointed.
LawRight was unsuccessful in obtaining on-going funding for the following services:

  • Townsville
  • LegalPod
  • Mental Health Law Practice
  • Extra support for the Cairns HPLC

They were successful in their application to operate a Duty Lawyer service at QCAT to provide comprehensive services for parties impacted by domestic and family violence.
They have been advised staff with the Townsville and LegalPod services that they can no longer operate, which leaves them 350 deeply disadvantaged clients with nowhere else to go for their multiple legal problems. The contributions of over 70 pro bono lawyers to effectively assist them are now an untapped resource.
The impact on other LawRight services is not yet clear. What is clear is that many vulnerable Queenslanders will spiral deeper into disadvantage without LawRight’s intervention.
