Legal Aid

At Herbert Smith Freehills, we believe that everyone should have equal access to justice and opportunity. We are committed to using our expertise, resources and leadership to ensure that equal access to justice and opportunity is a reality through our pro bono and community programs. The four areas of focus for our program are homelessness, reconciliation, disability and health, and building the rule of law. We provide pro bono legal advice to marginalised individuals and not for profit organisations. We provide systemic advocacy, take on clients through legal clinics and send our lawyers on pro bono secondments.

Queensland Government

The Queensland Government allocates Queensland and Commonwealth funding for legal assistance services delivered by Legal Aid Queensland and community organisations (mostly Community Legal Centres). Over 2017-20 community organisations will receive $60.4 million in total of Queensland and Commonwealth funding to provide free legal assistance services to vulnerable and disadvantaged Queenslanders.

We are pleased to welcome representatives from the Queensland Government Department of Justice and Attorney-General to facilitate a workshop at the Annual Conference seeking feedback on the process used to allocate legal assistance service delivery funding over 2017-20.

The Services Union

The Services Union continually advocates and campaigns for investment in quality community services.

In the last 12 months, The Services Union stood alongside members working in Community Legal Centres (CLCs) in their ‘Fund Equal Justice’ Campaign.

The Services Union mobilised its membership across all industries to publicly campaign and show solidarity to CLC workers. Members signed petitions, lobbied Members of Parliament and participated in social media campaigns. The Services Union also invested in a campaign billboard in Brisbane.

Since 2016, The Services Union has been actively campaigning to ensure the Community Sector in Queensland achieve a legislative framework for the portability of entitlements. During this period, The Services Union has been collecting the stories of workers in the Community Sector.  In 2018, The Services Union plans to ramp up this campaign by holding direct employer discussions, seeking support for a Portable Entitlements Scheme.

You can be sure when Real Change is needed - The Services Union is a strong united voice in the political arena.

Queensland Law Society

Queensland Law Society provides a dynamic hub for Queensland's legal community and seeks to engage actively with its members and the public to provide leadership, practical solutions and reliable support.

We represent and promote more than 9,000 legal professionals, increase community understanding of the law, help protect the rights of individuals and advise the community about the many benefits solicitors can provide.

Queensland Law Society assists legal practitioners to continually improve their services, while monitoring their practices to ensure they meet the high standards set for the profession in Queensland.  And we assist the public by advising government on improvements to laws affecting Queenslanders, and working to improve their access to the law.

We hold specific statutory responsibilities, including the issuing of practising certificates, maintaining solicitors’ records, regulating the operation of solicitors' trust accounts and protecting the public. To find out more go here.
