Ms Joanna Carey is currently the Assistant Secretary, Engagement Branch at the Royal Commission into Violence, Abuse, Neglect and Exploitation of People with Disability. Based in Brisbane but with a team located across Brisbane, Sydney and Canberra, she is responsible for managing around 60 staff to deliver a diverse range of functions for the Royal Commission, including:
- Private Sessions
- Community Engagement
- Call centre and email enquiries line
- Counselling and support
- Media and Communications.
As a person with disability herself, Joanna is deeply committed to ensuring the Royal Commission hears directly from people with disability and their supporters, about their experiences of violence, abuse, neglect and exploitation.
Prior to working with the Royal Commission, Joanna held senior executive roles in the Commonwealth public service, including managing state offices and leading legal branches.
Joanna’s professional qualifications include Bachelor of Laws (Hons) and Bachelor of Arts (Psychology) from the University of Queensland. She is currently undertaking a Master of Business Administration.
