Cairns CLC helps Max feel safe

Max* is an unemployed Indigenous man who was staying in emergency accommodation at a local homeless shelter.  Max had been threatened by his ex-partner and was distressed and in fear for his safety.

Max went to his local police station for help, but was told that he needed to complete and file his own Application for a Domestic Violence Protection Order.  As he is not very proficient in written English and had no other support, Max wasn’t able to complete his Application so that a Protection Order could be made.

The staff from the Cairns Community Legal Centre first met Max when he attended their Domestic Violence Duty Lawyer Service at Cairns Magistrates’ Court for assistance.  They adjourned Max’s court hearing, and then assisted Max at their office to properly compete his application for a Protection Order.  The amended Application was then filed, and they appeared at court for Max on the next listed date where a Protection Order was made for Max’s safety.
