Mary’s* children had been removed by the Department of Child Safety, and because of the size of the family, the children had been placed at different locations across Queensland. So that she could access assistance and maintain close contact with community support staff, Mary moved 195 kilometres from St George to Roma, where the Aboriginal Family Legal Service Southern Queensland (AFLSSQ) is located.
AFLSSQ were able to first secure the return of Mary’s two oldest children to her care. A lawyer and community support officer were able to assist Mary in the negotiations with the Department, and referred her to parenting skills courses.
After this process, all of Mary’s children were returned to her care. They are all now doing well, and there is little involvement from the Department, leaving Mary relieved and happy with the outcome.
