Across borders: mother and daughter reunited

Lee*, who is from Eritrea, wished to bring her daughter into Australia. However, she had not previously declared her daughter’s existence in her application for her own visa. This was a potential problem with the Department.

Lee came to the Refugee and Immigration Legal Service who was able to advocate for her. Refugee and Immigration Legal Service helped Lee to explain that she had not declared the child because her then partner was abusive, and had told her that she was not allowed to mention this child to other people.

The Department accepted these circumstances and the child was granted a visa.  Lee now lives in Australia with her daughter.
