It has been more than 6 years since the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse (the Commission) handed down its final report. The findings of the Commission revealed a tragic past of sexual abuse in institutions that for so many years had been ignored by the institutions and adults that were supposed to be protecting the children in their care. The Commission also found that the number of children who are sexually abused in familial or other circumstances far exceeds those who are abused in an institution.
Since then, justice making, compensation and redress processes for child sexual abuse have had many changes and it continues to be an ever shifting landscape. Legal processes for survivors of child sexual abuse can offer important avenues towards healing.
In this webinar, Rachel Neil, Acting Principal Lawyer and Sian Griffiths, Acting Managing Lawyer from knowmore Legal Service will discuss the operation of the National Redress Scheme and some important amendments that came into effect this year. They will also discuss other options for survivors, including those abused outside of institutions.
